Find Forgotten Subscriptions: How to Make Recurring Payments Visible

Key takeaways

  • Subscriptions escape attention because each single debit is small — together they are a fixed-cost block.
  • The three hiding places: annual subscriptions, collective debits from the app stores and quiet price increases.
  • Convert monthly amounts into annual costs. Only then is the scale right.
  • In Germany, businesses must offer a cancellation button (Kündigungsbutton) on their website since July 2022 (§ 312k BGB).

Ask yourself without looking: what do you pay per month for subscriptions? Most people are clearly off with this estimate — and systematically too low. That is not carelessness; it is simply how subscriptions work.

Why subscriptions become invisible

A subscription asks for a decision exactly once: when you sign up. After that it runs on its own. The debit is small, it repeats, it looks the same every month — and perception gets used to exactly that. What stands out are unfamiliar amounts, not familiar ones.

On top of that, the value of a subscription varies, the payment does not. The second music app you have not opened since the trial month costs exactly as much as in the first month.

Three ways to find every subscription

1. Read your statements backwards — at least 13 months. Twelve are not enough: an annual subscription debited the month before would slip right through. Check your current account and credit card separately — many subscriptions deliberately run via the card.

2. Open the subscription lists in the app stores. What you signed up for through Apple or Google often appears on your statement only as a collective debit from the store. Which services are behind it you only see in the store’s own subscription overview.

3. Look for patterns, not names. You recognise a subscription by the combination of the same payee, a similar amount and a regular interval. If your transactions are in a spreadsheet or an app, sort by payee — the repetitions stand out on their own.

The three most common hiding places

Hiding placeWhy it works
Annual subscriptionsThey do not appear in eleven out of twelve months. If you only check last month, you never find them.
Collective debitsOne amount, several services. The statement shows the payment provider, not the service.
Quiet price increasesSame payee, same rhythm, different amount. If you only look for familiar names, you miss the difference.

What subscriptions really cost

The most important calculation is the simplest: times twelve. A service at €12.99 a month is a decision about roughly €156 a year — and that number feels different from the monthly one.

Do the total once, completely: every subscription you found, monthly and annual, converted to annual costs. Not to scare yourself, but to have a solid basis. After that the question per subscription is no longer “€12.99 — fine” but “is this worth €156 a year to me?”. For some the answer is clearly yes. That is what the calculation is for.

Cancelling: what applies in Germany

If you are used to cancellation hotlines from elsewhere, German law is on your side here. Since 1 July 2022, § 312k BGB requires businesses that sell ongoing contracts to consumers online to provide a cancellation button (Kündigungsbutton). It is labelled in German — look for „Verträge hier kündigen“ (cancel contracts here) or similarly unambiguous wording. Cancelling through it must work directly, without a login hurdle or a phone loop. You receive a confirmation; keep it, it is your proof.

Three things that often surprise people:

sum detects recurring payments automatically and shows them as their own overview: what goes out monthly, quarterly or annually, when the next payment is due and which amounts have changed. Detected items flow straight into your fixed costs. Today your transactions come in via CSV import; the automatic bank connection (PSD2) is in the works. You cancel yourself — sum shows you what you are deciding about.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find all my subscriptions?

Go back through at least 13 months of statements — that catches annual subscriptions too — and check your current account and credit card separately. Add the subscription lists in the app stores, because contracts made there often appear on your statement only as a collective debit from the store.

Why are subscriptions so easy to overlook?

Because each single debit is small and no longer requires a decision. The purchase was months ago, the payment happens automatically — attention is triggered by unfamiliar amounts, not familiar ones.

What applies when cancelling a subscription in Germany?

Since 1 July 2022, businesses offering ongoing contracts to consumers online must provide a cancellation button (Kündigungsbutton, § 312k BGB). You must be able to cancel through it without detours, and you receive a confirmation — keep it.

Do subscriptions count as fixed costs?

Yes. Anything debited regularly in the same amount belongs in the fixed-cost block, even if it does not feel like it. That is exactly why overlooked subscriptions make every budget look better than it is.
