Funding a Career Break: What Twelve Months of Expenses Make Possible

Key takeaways

  • Level 5 (Flexibility) is the overlooked in-between step: not retirement, but options.
  • The calculation is monthly expenses × 12 — not salary × 12.
  • The emergency fund does not count. It has a different job.
  • In Germany, employment during unpaid leave counts as continuing for at most one month (§ 7(3) SGB IV) — insurance after that has to be arranged.
  • If your residence permit is tied to your job, check what a break means for it before you plan.

A lot is written about financial independence: 25 times your annual expenses, the 4% rule, the exit. About the level before it, almost nothing — even though it is the one that changes everyday life the most. And it can be reached considerably earlier.

The overlooked in-between step

Level 5 is reached when your invested wealth equals about twelve months of expenses. That is not an exit — it is something more practical: the ability to make a decision that costs money.

The real value rarely lies in doing nothing. It lies in your negotiating position — towards your employer and towards your own fear.

The calculation

Twelve months of expenses, not twelve months of salary. The difference is large: during the break you live on your expenses, not on your previous income. Earn €3,500 and spend €2,300, and you need around €27,600 — not €42,000.

Two corrections still belong in the calculation:

Monthly compounding, nominal, before tax. The interest rate is an assumption, not a promise.

What does not belong in it

The emergency fund is not part of this sum. It covers the unforeseen and has to stay available — especially during a break with no salary coming in. Count it in and you plan the project with the money meant for emergencies. More in Emergency fund.

Where the money should be

The same plain principle applies as for any goal with a date: the closer the planned date, the less fluctuation the money can take. A break in ten years is something different from one in eighteen months — in the second case, what decides is not the expected return but whether the sum is reliably there on the day.

The German details that surprise people

Four points that regularly surface too late in career-break plans:

  1. There is no statutory right to a sabbatical. Unpaid leave is a matter of agreement with your employer.
  2. Social insurance ends sooner than expected. During unpaid leave, employment counts as continuing for contribution purposes for at most one month (§ 7(3) SGB IV). After that you have to insure yourself — clarify this with your employer and health insurer beforehand, not afterwards.
  3. Resigning usually triggers a blocking period. If you end the employment yourself, expect a blocking period (Sperrzeit) for unemployment benefit, in the standard case twelve weeks (§ 159 SGB III). A self-chosen break is not an insured event.
  4. Your residence permit may depend on your job. If your permit to stay in Germany is tied to your employment, a resignation or long break can have consequences for it. Clarify that with the foreigners’ authority (Ausländerbehörde) before you decide — not with a blog.

A common alternative is a working-time account or block model: you work for a while at reduced pay and save the difference as paid time off. The advantage lies exactly in point 2 — the employment continues.

sum knows the number this calculation is built on: your real monthly expenses — from your transactions, including detected fixed costs and recurring payments. From it you set up a goal, and sum tracks the progress automatically instead of you having to keep count. Today your transactions come in via CSV import; the automatic bank connection (PSD2) is in the works.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for a career break?

As a guide, twelve months of expenses for a year — based on your spending, not your salary. Keep in mind that some items fall away during the break, such as commuting, while others can be added, such as health insurance contributions.

Does my emergency fund count towards the career-break savings?

No. The emergency fund covers the unforeseen and has to stay available. Counting it in means financing the planned break with the money meant for emergencies — and standing without a buffer the moment something goes wrong.

What happens to my health insurance during unpaid leave?

For contribution purposes, employment during unpaid leave counts as continuing for at most one month (§ 7(3) SGB IV). If the break lasts longer, you have to arrange your insurance yourself — clarify that with your employer and health insurer beforehand.

Do I get unemployment benefit if I resign for a career break?

If you end the employment yourself, you have to expect a blocking period (Sperrzeit), in the standard case twelve weeks (§ 159 SGB III). A self-chosen break is not an insured event — it has to be carried by your own savings.
